William Tyler
Call: 1996
Preferred Counsel for the Equality and Human Rights Commission
Ranked as a Leading Junior at the London Bar in Children Law
‘Superb’, and an ‘Exceptional Advocate ‘ (Legal 500)
William’s extensive public law Children Act
practice regularly sees him litigating the most serious cases in the County and
the High Court. He has developed a
particular expertise in cases involving very serious injury and difficult
medical evidence (having appeared for the successful Local Authority in the
landmark Shaken Baby Syndrome case before the then President, Dame Elizabeth
Butler–Sloss – Re A & D). He has regularly appeared in cases
involving allegations of factitious injury syndrome, of serious, sometimes
serial, sexual abuse, and in cases with a complicated international
element. He is much valued by
Local Authorities for his careful and thorough preparation and presentation, by
solicitors for parents for his persuasive and persistent advocacy, and by
Children’s Guardians for the dedication and balance he brings to care cases.
These applications very often include or lead to Placement Order and Adoption proceedings. William also has significant experience of cases in which the propriety of a ‘secret adoption’ is litigated in the High Court and of cases involving international adoptions.
William deals adeptly with the more esoteric cases involving children, having appeared in many cases involving the use of the High Court’s inherent jurisdiction, in relation both to Wardship and single–issue ‘treatment’ cases. He has sad experience of a number of cases involving the need to consider the planned non–resuscitation of or withdrawal of treatment from severely injured babies and children. In such cases, his medico–legal knowledge has proved indispensable.
