History

With a history extending over 100 years, Chambers has participated in the evolution of the modern system of justice from the Judicature Acts in the nineteenth century up to the present day Human Rights Act.

Then, as now, Chambers served the legal and wider community. No fewer than four former members of Chambers have been elevated to the High Court Bench. They include Mrs Justice Elizabeth Lane, the first female High Court Judge, Mr Justice Swanwick who, when at the Bar, led for the prosecution in the trial of Hanratty; and Mr Justice Hunt, Chambers' latest addition to the High Court. That tradition continues: present senior members of Chambers are deputy High Court Judges, Recorders and part-time Chairmen of Employment Tribunals. Chambers takes special pride in the fact that, on 1st October 2002, Frances Oldham QC, our current Head of Chambers, started her term as the first female Leader of the Midland Circuit.
