Matthew Lowe prosecutes in human trafficking case   Wednesday 10 Feb 2010

Matthew Lowe prosecuted in the case R v Hanh Van VU and Duc Thi VU, instructed by the East Midlands Complex Crime Unit in Nottingham.

After a 2 ½ week trial at Northampton Crown Court Mr Vu was convicted of all 12 counts alleging various offences including facilitating illegal entry into the UK, money laundering and perjury.

The Prosecution's case was that the defendant ran a trafficking racket bringing Vietnamese nationals into the UK illegally under false names and details. They were then put to work at menial jobs passing on almost all their earnings to the defendant to pay for his role in bringing them to the UK. Over a 2 year period Mr Vu was able to transfer £180,000 back to Vietnam.

In addition, the defendant and his half sister went through a sham marriage in London and pretended they were husband and wife in order to assist his application for British citizenship.

Mr Vu received a total of 11 years imprisonment. His half sister Duc Thi Vu received 2 ½ years.
